Before 16
Elizabeth became a mother at just 16 after a traumatic sexual assault. Now, 15 years later, she reflects on the profound challenges and emotions of raising her child under extraordinary circumstances.
When Elizabeth became a mother at the age of 16 after a violent sexual assault, she took out her frustration on her young daughter with the edge of a razor blade. This delicate and sensitively made short chronicles the subsequent reconciliation between Elizabeth and her daughter, who is now a young woman. Brave, tender and honest, Before 16 reflects on the profound emotional challenges of raising and loving a child who is the product of rape. Beautifully shot, this short film reflects a promising future for director Loïc Niyonkuru in her use of the documentary format to facilitate psychological healing.
