Guardian of the Well
Biir Gardi
Amid a historic drought in the southern reaches of Chad’s Sahara Desert, a well-goer recalls his lost cattle and contemplates his plans for a change in livelihood.
‘This used to be a big town’, says a man waiting at a well in drought-stricken Chad. ‘But then all the livestock died.’ This visceral and immersive short film explores the climate emergency through the many and varied conversations that take place around a well, in a region where nature has wreaked havoc on the livelihoods of the local community. Guardian of the Well is a concise and insightful look at a community affected by climate change struggling to survive. And although it presents a particularly severe situation, the film is an ominous warning note to a rapidly warming planet.
