I Did Not Ask for This! is a biographical documentary that focuses on the moments of violence in the life of Tsakane Motshweni from Daveyton township. Starting from his experiences of witnessing crime as a boy and then growing up in gang culture, Tsakane explains the circumstances of his upbringing. As he moves between events, he describes the broader social problems that contribute to the spread of violence. Bravely, he opens up about being a survivor of sexual violence while in juvenile detention while also explaining the culture of masculinity, secrecy, and retribution present in these centres. This film gives a voice to a man whose life was thrust into violence to tell his story but also to explain the wider social issues that create stories like his.
