About the Film

After nearly a decade, filmmaker Kurt Orderson reconnects with his friend Mario “Amigo” Laaistock, a blind Afrikaaps MC, rapper, and cultural voice whose instinct-driven creativity reads the world through sound. Moving between memory and presence, Amigo reshapes experience into rhythmic storytelling. Blending vérité observation with musical sequences, the film travels through the Cape Flats, offering close access to a network of rappers and artists, while following Amigo’s upbringing, and shifting perspectives after a tragic accident redefined his life. His haunting, honest, and prescriptive lyrics echo a life of struggle, endurance and empathy on the streets. Now in a period of renewed artistic growth, Amigo reclaims authorship through music and community, within everyday environments shaped by instability, land tensions, and survival. Amigo The Griot reflects on music as the genesis of healing, where storytelling exists as a means of reconciling past wounds, strengthening community identity, and reimagining the self through sound.
