About the Film
In the rural heartlands of the Eastern Cape, a pioneering experiment in community resilience unfolds as Professor Pumela Msweli introduces time banking to empower communities through shared skills and collective exchange. What begins as an innovative system to build self-sustaining local economies soon confronts a deeper crisis in Luthengele village, where severe water scarcity threatens daily survival. Prolonged droughts, unpredictable rainfall driven by climate change, failing infrastructure, and systemic corruption have intensified conditions, leaving residents without reliable access to water. Led by local leaders, the community mobilises, forming grassroots cooperatives, identifying skills, and organising collective action. From a 90-kilometre fundraising journey to the construction of boreholes in the village, the film traces a community rising against neglect, whilst reclaiming dignity and agency through unity. Bridging the Disconnect grounds larger systemic issues in deeply personal narratives, unfolding as a powerful exploration of innovation, survival, and the ongoing fight for a basic human right.
