Everybody to Kenmure Street

In May 2021, an attempt by the UK Home Office to deport two Muslim residents of a Glasgow neighbourhood triggered one of the most spontaneous and successful acts of civil resistance in recent memory. Beginning with a local man sliding under the immigration-enforcement van to prevent it from leaving, other residents quickly showed their support and surrounded the vehicle—all with cellphones in hand. As the morning progressed and the protest went viral, more and more people arrived, all determined to stop the deportation of their neighbours. By the end of the day there were more than 2000 people in attendance—along with a cavalcade of police vehicles and officers.
