About the Film

From Mbuzini to KaNgwane, Dear Sikhonkwane traces the life of Sikhonkwane Steven Mahlalela, one of the earliest SiSwati authors, educators, and cultural custodians, who wrote, co-wrote, and edited more than 40 books in under two decades. Born in 1928, Mahlalela rose through the education system to become one of the first Black graduates in the Eastern Transvaal, later serving as school inspector and director of education in KaNgwane. His personal ascent unfolds within the wider socio-political context of South African history; missionary schooling, Bantu Education, and the systematic marginalisation of African languages. Seen through the eyes of those who loved him, the film moves between personal and historical reflection, weaving archival fragments and anecdotes with animation, allowing memory to surface across generations. At its heart, Dear Sikhonkwane revels in language as survival, education as resistance, and storytelling as cultural responsibility, whilst honouring an unsung intellectual whose life affirmed the dignity in one’s mother tongue; an inheritance that remains alive through those who continue to speak it.
